Laminectomy is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the bony arch or lamina, on the dorsal surface of a vertebra is removed. It is done to relieve back pain that has not been helped by more conservative treatments. Laminectomy is an elective procedure rather than an emergency surgery. Laminectomy is recommended when one or more of the following symptoms and disorders that affect the lower back are seen in the body : Sciatica, Spinal Stenosis, Narrowing of the spinal canal compressing the cord, Cauda Equina Syndrome, Herniated disc and Osteoarthritis.
Laminectomy is performed under general anesthesia in which the patient is usually positioned lying on the side or stomach. A retractor is used to spread apart the muscles and the fatty tissues covering the spine. When the laminae have been reached, the bony arch is cut in order to get to the ligamentum flavum (which is a band of yellow tissue attached to the vertebra that helps to support the spinal column). Thereby an opening is made in the ligamentum flavum to reach the spinal canal and then to the compressed nerve. At this point the cause of compression will be visible (that may be a herniated disk, tumour, fragmented disk etc) which is then rectified. This Surgery is completed in one to three hours.
Sciatica
Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal compressing the cord.
Cauda Equina Syndrome: A rare disorder caused when a broken disk, bone fracture, or spinal stenosis put intense pressure on the spinal nerve roots at the lower end of the spinal cord.
Herniated disc: A herniated disk is a condition when the nucleus ruptures and is forced through the outer annulus into the spaces between the vertebrae. Thereby putting pressure on the nerve roots or compresses the spinal cord itself.
Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a disorder in which the cartilage in the hips, knees, and other joints gradually breaks down, allowing the surfaces of the bones to rub directly against each other.
