It is a surgical procedure to repair the Rotator's Cuff post injury in order to regain the movement of the shoulder in an smooth manner.
Why Is It Done?
Surgery to repair a rotator cuff is done when:
A rotator cuff tear is caused by a sudden injury. In these cases, it's best to do surgery soon after the injury.
A complete rotator cuff tear causes severe shoulder weakness.
The rotator cuff has failed to improve with 3 to 6 months of conservative nonsurgical treatment alone
Pre Operative Period: The shoulder joint will be evaluated. There will be several blood tests to assess the state of liver, kidneys, ECG and X ray chest will be taken for ensuring a sound heart and lungs.
Post Operative Period: The arm will be protected in a sling for a defined period of time to avoid additional injury. On the next day after the surgery you will be allowed to do passive exercises with the approval of your surgeon. In these exercises a therapist will assist you to move the joint for achieving the desired range of motion. Active exercises and stretching under the guidance of your therapist would begin 6-8 weeks after the surgery.
It is important for patients to continue in an outpatient physical-therapy program along with home exercises for optimal outcome of the rotator cuff surgery.
